LAS VEGAS – The Dallas Mavericks will be without three of their best players when they open the tournament-style play of the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2018.
Dennis Smith Jr., Johnathan Motley and Dorian Finney-Smith will not play for Dallas when the Mavs (2-1) meet the Chicago Bulls (1-2) today at 5:30 p.m. CDT at the Thomas & Mack Center. The game will be broadcast on NBA TV. Mavs coach Jamahl Mosley said the team had already seen what they wanted out of Smith, Motley and Finney-Smith, as all three players also sat out Monday’s game against the the Golden State Warriors.
Also, it is highly unlikely that rookie guard Luka Doncic will play against the Bulls since he has yet to go through any 5-on-5 practice sessions with the Mavs.
If the Mavs win that game they’ll play on Saturday at 6 p.m. CDT at Cox Pavilion against the winner of the Detroit-Minnesota contest.
However, if the Mavs lose to the Bulls, they’ll play on Friday at 5 p.m. CDT at Cox Pavilion against the Washington-Los Angeles Clippers loser.
The Mavs lost their first game in Las Vegas to the Phoenix Suns, 92-85, last Friday. But they bounced back and defeated the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday (81-78) and the Warriors on Monday (91-71).
Chicago got to this point by upending Cleveland (86-81) last Saturday before suffering losses to the Los Angeles Lakers (69-60) on Sunday and to the Atlanta Hawks (101-93) on Tuesday.
