The Dallas Mavericks along with BEDGEAR and Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) spent Friday morning honoring first responders at Dallas Fire Station No. 1. The fire station received 12 new twin mattresses from BEDGEAR, and NFM donated six recliners, three cooling fans, and an entertainment set to make the most of their rest and recovery time.
The fire station also received a custom Dallas Mavs jersey to hang.
Dallas Mavs swingman Theo Pinson represented the franchise on Thursday and spent time unboxing the beds, visiting with emergency personnel, and he got a tour of the firetrucks and station.
“Oh man, our first responders deserve great things to work with, and getting rest and recovery is a big part of that,” Pinson said. “To give them a better experience when they are resting (is important) so they can give us a better performance out there. They do great already. But they deserve all this stuff.”
May is when the world’s community comes together to recognize and honor firefighters’ sacrifices to ensure communities and environments are as safe as possible.
Each season the Mavs give back to a local station. Fire Station No. 1 is significant to the franchise because it’s responsible for the American Airlines Center and Mavericks HQ. These are the same men and women caring for fans on game nights.
The Mavs ManiAACs, D-Town Crew and Mascot Champ also attended the event.
Assistant Fire Chief Frank McKinley spoke on behalf of the department and said the items are greatly appreciated and will be put to use.
“I’m responsible for Dallas Fire Rescue’s facilities, so it’s an extreme honor to receive these wonderful pieces of furniture. It’s very needed,” he said. “It’s a testament to how DFR likes to extend our partnerships with outside agencies and companies. So we really want to say thank you to Nebraska Furniture, BEDGEAR and the Dallas Mavericks. We really do appreciate it.”
Pinson, who wears No. 1 on the court, admitted that he has a particular affinity towards the fire station with the same number.
After shaking hands with all the first responders, he tried out their new beds and learned about the ins and outs of the station. He said these men and women are the true heroes in our communities.
“Sleep is very important; you want to get as much sleep as possible and the best sleep during the time you do get,” Pinson said. “I understand lack of sleep now that I have a little girl. But the time you do get is very important. So I think it’s a big-time thing we did today for them and everyone else. We really appreciate everything they do.”
