The Mavericks, decimated at the point guard spot by health issues, signed two emergency ballhandlers Thursday afternoon.
Carlik Jones, who is familiar with the Mavericks’ system after his stint in summer league and training camp, was signed off the Texas Legends roster. He had started 10 games for the G-League affiliate of the Mavericks and averaged 20.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists.
Minutes later, the team announced they signed eight-year NBA veteran Brandon Knight. He has career averages of 14.1 points and 4 assists and was playing with Sioux Falls in the G-league.
Both players were signed via the COVID-19 hardship allowance.
The Mavericks have lost point guards Luka Dončić, Trey Burke and JaQuori McLaughlin to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
It is believed that at least Jones if not both new signees will be available Thursday night against the Milwaukee Bucks at American Airlines Center.
All told, the Mavericks have seven players out because of COVID-19 protocols (Reggie Bullock, Tim Hardaway Jr., Josh Green and Maxi Kleber joining the point guards. They also are without Willie Cauley-Stein (personal reasons) and Eugene Omoruyi (right foot surgery).
Kristaps Porzingis (right toe soreness) is questionable.
In addition to the point guards, the Mavericks also signed 6-6 Charlie Brown Jr. on Thursday morning. He appeared in 10 games for Atlanta during 2019-20 and averaged 2 points. Brown has been with Delaware of the G-League this season, averaging 16.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.9 steals.
