Over the weekend, NBA on TNT dropped an excellent video piece chronicling Luka Doncic and Dzanan Musa’s rise through the ranks of European basketball, as well as the extraordinarily high number of hoopers that come from the former Yugoslavia.
It’s a really interesting glimpse into the rookies’ lives. Specifically, we go to Madrid with Doncic as he and his mother reflect on moving from Slovenia to Spain in Luka’s adolescent years, and his rapid growth from basketball prospect to EuroLeague MVP and champion at the domestic, continental, and national team level. We also get a few pretty great shots of Doncic’s car very early on. The guy’s got taste.
I would highly recommend setting aside some time and watching the full thing. There is more Musa than Doncic, but both come from the same region of Europe and there is a fascinating hoops history in that part of the world: From familiar old names like Divac, Stojakovic, and Petrovic to more modern ones including Jokic and Dragic, the former Yugoslavia has produced some of the best European basketball players ever. The Mavs hope Doncic is next in line.
