DALLAS — Don’t look now, but the NBA Draft is quickly approaching.
Armed with a lottery pick for the first time since 2000, when they selected Etan Thomas with the 12th overall selection the last time the franchise didn’t make the playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks will look to make a splash by selecting a Day 1 contributor in the first round. Still, even with the NBA Lottery not until May 21 to determine exactly which spot they will be selecting, the Mavericks will send members of their front office to Chicago this week for the pre-draft combine to gauge the level of talent that figures to fall their way.
In total, 60 of the top collegiate, Development League and international prospects will come to show off their skills Thursday and Friday at the annual event. Meanwhile, the Mavs will get their first up-close and personal look at what this year’s draft has to offer before bringing president of basketball operations and GM Donnie Nelson’s proclamation at the end of this season to fruition.
“You know, I think we’re still waiting to see who’s going to be there come June, in terms of players declaring and such,” Nelson said when addressing the Mavs’ draft-day plans during his exit interview on April 18. “My guess is we’ll be as aggressive, if not more so, than we’ve ever been. Whether that’s us drafting, acquiring, free agency or trade, we will turn over every rock. Believe me.”
