A seven-game winning streak and a slew of triple-doubles was enough to propel the Mavericks’ Luka Dončić to the NBA’s player of the month award for the Western Conference.
The Mavericks had a successful February, going 8-3, and Luka capped the month with a 30-point triple-double at Toronto, the first time any NBA player has had a triple-double of 30 points or more on his birthday.
Below is the official news release:
LUKA DONČIĆ NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH
The NBA announced today that Mavericks guard Luka Dončić was named the Kia NBA Western Conference Player of the Month for games played in February, marking the fourth time in his career he has received the honor (November 2019, February 2022, December 2022). Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki (6) is the only Maverick to win the award more times.
Dončić (6-7, 230) led the Mavericks to an 8-3 record during the month with averages of 33.4 points (.517 FG%, .398 3FG%), 9.6 rebounds, 10.3 assists and 1.8 steals in 37.2 minutes per game. He posted 30-plus points in eight of the team’s 11 games during the month, including 35-plus points five times and 40-or-more points on three occasions.
The five-time All-Star led the Mavericks to a seven-game win streak from Feb. 5 to 22, which tied their longest since their championship season in 2010-11. He was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from Monday, Feb. 5 through Sunday, Feb. 11, after he led Dallas to a 4-0 week with averages of 31.3 points (.513 FG%, .442 3FG%), 10.5 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 1.8 steals in 37.5 minutes.
Dončić tallied 35 points (13-27 FG, 4-11 3FG), a season-high-tying 18 rebounds, nine assists, two steals, one block and just one turnover in 43 minutes in the Mavericks’ 119-107 win at Brooklyn on Feb. 6. He became the first player in NBA history to produce at least 35 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists with one-or-fewer turnovers.
The 6-7 Slovenian finished one rebound shy of a 40-point triple-double when he posted 41 points (14-27 FG, 6-11 3FG, 7-7 FT), nine rebounds, 11 assists and three steals in the club’s 123-113 victory over Phoenix on Feb. 22.
Dončić capped off the month by going for 30 points (11-23 FG), 11 rebounds, 16 assists and two steals in Dallas’ 136-125 victory at Toronto on Feb. 28 on his 25th birthday. He became the first player in NBA history to record a 30-point triple-double on his birthday.
Dončić leads the NBA in 35-point games (25) and 40-point efforts (12). He also leads the league in 30-point triple-doubles (11), 35-point triple-doubles (7) and 40-point triple-doubles (2). He is currently riding a streak of three consecutive 30-point triple-doubles. He is the first player in franchise history to record three consecutive triple-doubles and just the fourth player in league history (Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, Russell Westbrook) to produce three straight 30-point triple-doubles.
