April 25, 2018 (Dallas, TX) The Dallas Mavericks are proud to announce that JJ Barea has been nominated as a finalist for the 2017-18 Seasonlong NBA Cares Community Assist Award. The award is open to all players recognizing them for their outstanding efforts in the community during the 2017-18 NBA season.
The recipient of the 2017-18 Seasonlong NBA Cares Community Assist Award will be determined by an NBA panel of judges and an end-of-season voting platform on social media. The Seasonlong nominees include the offseason winner, six monthly winners plus three additional candidates voted on by the executive panel from the pool of all 2017-18 monthly nominees.
Using #NBACommunityAssist and #JJBarea, fans can vote for JJ on social media over the course of a ten-day voting period, April 25 – May 6, 2018.
The winner will be announced with a press release and at the NBA Awards Show following the fan vote and will receive a $25,000 donation to the charity of his choice.
JJ Barea is being recognized for his relief efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Coordinating five trips to the territory where he was born and raised, JJ used the Mavericks’ team plane, with help from Mark Cuban, to personally deliver much-needed supplies in the days after the hurricane. JJ also launched a fundraiser on YouCaring.com for families affected by the hurricane that has raised more than $250,000, he also personally raised nearly $500,000 and he worked with the Mavericks to donate 100 percent of all single-game ticket sales from their Oct. 25 game to Puerto Rico, generating an additional $114,000.
