Mavs fans at American Airlines Center last Friday were treated to a special halftime performance from American Idol finalist and Texas native Jack Blocker.
The 26-year-old vocalist, who finished in third place on the most recent season of American Idol, took the court during the Mavs-Suns matchup on November 8. It was his second performance at a Mavs game this year, having previously performed in May as part of his American Idol hometown spotlight.
With the TV crew and cameras at bay, Blocker said this opportunity was an even bigger dream come true.
“Last time when I was here, it was kind of in the heat of a ton of crazy things coming at me at the same time, and this time, I got to come in by myself this morning and look around and honestly reflect a little bit more,” said Blocker. “When [I was on American Idol], it was like 100 miles an hour all the time, so this has been slower and honestly cooler to take it all in.
“I grew up coming to games here, and now I live in Nashville and watch every game on NBA League Pass, so this is surreal.”
During his performance, Blocker covered the Hank Williams hit “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and debuted his original song “Lone Star,” a tribute to his love for Texas, which will be included on his upcoming album.
“I think the Dallas fans are the reason that I have even the ability to have a career,” he said. “The local support that I’ve had backing me— moving to Nashville is like being a small fish in a big pond, but that support has really driven me to what I’m doing right now and to keep sticking at it.”
Blocker recently wrapped a three-state tour in Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas and is now shifting his focus to the recording studio as fans await his next album.
