Fresh off a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl less than two weeks ago, Kansas City Chiefs co-owner Dan Hunt was among the sellout crowd at Thursday’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns.
And Hunt was basking in the glow of the Chiefs making their fourth Super Bowl appearance in the past five seasons and winning it for the third time.
“We’ve had this unbelievable run,” Hunt told Mavs.com. “Talk about dynasties, and three Super Bowls in five years, and actually playing in four out of five is really amazing. But it’s a credit to all the talent we have, and it starts with the leadership from my brother (Chiefs co-owner) Clark Hunt.
“(Chiefs coach) Andy Reid is going to be a first ballot Pro Football Hall of Fame member. And you’ve got guys like (quarterback) Patrick Mahomes, (tight end) Travis Kelce and (defensive tackle) Chris Jones. What a special group of players. It’s just one of these great moments in time.”
This is not the only great moment in time the Hunt family has experienced.
“We’ve had the good fortunes through the association with the Chicago Bulls, being a minority shareholder in the team,” Hunt said. “My father was a founding investor of the Bulls, so we got to be part of those six championships over that eight-year period (1991-’98), and you enjoy these moments in time because they are so far and few between.
“And now we’re in this moment with the Chiefs enjoying it and trying to continue to push the family’s legacy forward. But these are just great moments and I’m so happy for the fans of Kansas City.”
Hunt, who also is the president of FC Dallas, was at the Mavs-Suns game for a jersey swap between Mavs point guard Luka Dončić and FC Dallas forward Jesús Jiménez.
“Luka and Jesús, they have a Spanish connection from the time that they were in Spain at the same time,” Hunt said. “It’s a fun swap.
“We’re celebrating our season kickoff, which is this Saturday at 7:30 at Toyota Stadium (in Frisco) against San Jose.”
As far as the Chiefs are concerned, they became the first team since the New England Patriots in 2004-’05 to win the Super Bowl in back-to-back years. No team has ever captured three consecutive Super Bowls, which is the task facing the Chiefs next season.
“It’s going to be interesting to see,” Hunt said. “We’re going to do our best to keep our core group together.
“When you have superstar players you always have a chance to do it.”
BRIEFLY: Before the Mavs’ 123-113 win over Phoenix on Thursday – both team’s first game since the week-long All-Star break — Mavs coach Jason Kidd said of the matchup against the Suns: “I think this is a good test to see who spent the most time in Cabo.” Told of that, Suns coach Frank Vogel smiled and said: “And what type of time did you spend in Cabo? There’s different types of Cabo.”. .Kidd said he’s been experimenting with different lineups this week in practice. “There’s a lot of different combinations that we’re going to try to see,” he said. “Some of them we may not be able to see in a game. We’ll have to see them in practice and see how they look, and if they look good we might have to roll it out in a game.” One Mavs lineup, Kidd said, that won’t see the light of day is having Dereck Lively II (7-1) and Daniel Gafford (6-10) on the court at the same time. “No, I’m not going with the Twin Towers,” Kidd said. “That didn’t make the cut. That just didn’t make the cut.”. .On the Mavs’ recent acquisitions of P.J. Washington (6-7) and Daniel Gafford, Phoenix Suns coach Frank Vogel said of the Mavs: “They’re huge now. With (Gafford) and Lively playing most of the game, they have a big roster. It means they’re bigger on the glass and have another lob catcher (and) bigger defensively at the rim.” . .Talking about how to contain Mavs guard Luka Dončić, Vogel said: “They’re great at attacking the double-teams. That’s the tricky thing. You got to strike a balance of not letting him be comfortable, and it just being completely exposed on the backside or have your guys running around in rotations for 48 minutes.” And when Kyrie Irving is on the court with Dončić, Vogel said: “When he’s out there they’re even more effective at attacking the double-teams.”. .Dante Exum (right knee bursitis) is the only member of the Mavs on the injury list. . .ESPN BET has Mavs point guard Luka Dončić as having the third-best odds of winning this season’s Most Valuable Player award. The Top 5 are Denver’s Nikola Jokic (-120), Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (+225), Dončić (+700), Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo (+1100) and Boston’s Jayson Tatum (+2500). . .Dončić finished Thursday’s game with 41 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists. The Mavs are 16-3 when Dončić has a 40-point, 10-assist game. . .The seven games in a row the Mavs have won is currently the longest in the NBA. It also ties for their longest winning streak the Mavs have had since 2022-23 and since they won the 2011 NBA title.
