MAVERICKS SIGN GUARD TIM HARDAWAY JR.
The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have signed guard Tim Hardaway Jr. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Hardaway Jr. (6-5, 205) is coming off a 2020-21 campaign that saw him connect on a career-high 207 3-pointers (8th-most in the NBA), the second most in franchise history, and his second consecutive season with 200-plus 3-point field goals for the Mavericks (204 in 2019-20). He averaged 16.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 28.4 minutes in a team-high 70 games (31 starts) while shooting 44.7% from the field, 39.1% from behind-the-arc and 81.6% from the foul line.
After Hardaway served the role of “sixth man” early in the season, he closed out the season in the starting lineup. As a starter, he improved his averages to 18.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 31.8 minutes in 31 starts. The shooting guard ended up fifth in Sixth Man of the Year voting.
The eight-year veteran registered a career-high 42 points (13-23 FG, 6-10 3FG, 10-10 FT), including 17 consecutive fourth quarter points, while leading Dallas to a victory over Detroit on April 29, 2021. Five days later on May 4, Hardaway tied a franchise record with a career-high 10 3-pointers in a victory in Miami. Over an eight-game span (4/29-5/12/21), Hardaway averaged 26.0 points (.557 FG%, .494 3FG%, .889 FT%) and the Mavericks went 7-1 in those games.
Dallas originally acquired Hardaway Jr. on January 21, 2019, along with Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee and Trey Burke, in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews and two future first-round draft picks.
The former Michigan guard was the 24th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft after a three-year college career for the Wolverines. He earned First Team All-Big Ten honors as a junior in 2013. Hardaway also earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors for the Knicks in 2014.
