Happy Thursday, Team Mavs!
Thank you for giving us heart and hustle over the 2017-18 basketball season. I appreciate what you do every day to represent our organization. Despite some on and off court challenges, you stayed focused and took care of our season ticket holders and fans, and more importantly, you took care of each other. You made EVERY game an amazing experience. Because of your incredible efforts, the 2017 season marked the highest sponsorship level in the history of the Mavericks with over $42.5M in overall gross sponsorships. The Mavericks were honored at the All-Star Game for being #1 in the NBA for total monies raised for the Anheuser-Busch Folds of Honor fundraiser.
THANK YOU!
As we approach the midpoint of our 100 day plan, I want to highlight 6 areas.
- Respect at Work – rolled out our new Respect in the Workplace policy and conducted training on March 28 and 29 with the make-up session planned for May 8. Established our zero tolerance and values-based employment workplace. We are about Character, Respect, Authenticity, Fairness, Teamwork and Safety (physical and emotional). Established the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer position (filled by Cyndee Wales) to proactively take steps to ensure an ethical culture while also responding to allegations of misconduct and impropriety. Cyndee also serves the team by ensuring organizational effectiveness.
- Inclusion & Diversity – improved the diversity of the Executive Leadership Team (e.g. now 42% women and 58% men). Research shows that decision making, innovation and effectiveness significantly improve when there’s a diverse group of people around the table.
- Organizational Effectiveness – reorganized the Marketing organization to provide more focus on traditional and digital marketing while also enhancing interdependent functions. Created the Community and Player Relations team to leverage synergies of those working to build and nurture external relationships and programs. Increased emphasis on the critical Communications and Events function as a key strategy to enhance our brand and tell our good story. Brought the Merchandising leaders in-house to further develop our bragging and branding strategy as we move further into e-sports and e-commerce. Appointed Tarsha LaCour to the Executive Leadership Team to lead our people strategy and handle all things HR. Many thanks to each of you for bringing to light several policies and practices in need of revision, enforcement, replacement or elimination. Work is underway!
- Employee Resource Groups – launched one ERG, modeling organizational best practices to create a sense of belonging for ALL and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth. W.O.M.E.N. was officially and enthusiastically launched last week. See the Women Of Mavs Empowering Network members for more exciting details. Planning is underway to launch more ERGs over the next several weeks. Many thanks to Gail, Whit, Erin and Ashley for all of their hard work.
- Business Planning Process – developed the schedule for our planning process for the upcoming 2018-19 season. Each group will meet in May to take a deep breath and then earnestly prepare their piece of the 19.2K plan. Yes, it’s about 19,200 fans joining us and enjoying an amazing sports and entertainment experience when our great players grace the floor of the AAC. This next season is about breaking records on and off the court!
- One on Ones – met with approximately 50% of our team of approximately 140 employees. I’m enjoying getting to know all of you. You’re providing valuable information to help us become even more effective and efficient. Leadership, communication, compensation, innovation, training and development have emerged as common themes of discussion. Thank you for speaking up and sharing your ideas. We will have our monthly “Let’s Talk” team huddle next week.
Well, that’s my “Two Cynts” for now. I’m delighted to have been asked to permanently join this amazing team. We moved from Richardson to Dallas last week. The Marshalls are proud to be Mavs and I’m happy to live just ten miles away from the office. I hope Dallas is ready!
