The Legends

If you could travel back in time to Dallas/Fort Worth at any point in the last century, one thing would be ever-present and true. The Blues...from Blind Lemon Jefferson, the father of Texas Blues, to Freddie King, to Oak Cliff's own Stevie Ray Vaughan all the way to contemporary local Country and R&B artists whose music today echoes the Blues of the past.

Odd to think of it today, yet the Blues began in Dallas in the early 20th century with acoustic guitars. In the 1930s and 40s, Dallas icon T-Bone Walker introduced the electric guitar to the genre, and, with it, a sense of Rock-and-Roll showmanship. During this same period, the legendary Robert Johnson traveled to Dallas to record 13 tracks, nearly half of his life's catalog, at 508 Park Avenue.

freddie

Dallasite Freddie King, tabbed one of the Three Kings of Blues Guitar, was a vocal powerhouse and was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as the #19 guitarist of all time. As his career developed, Freddie began working with music producers who were more experienced with R&B and Rock-and-Roll. As the Blues evolved, so did its influence on other musical expressions, and no place was more important to this growth than DFW.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was one of the few Blues artists who broke out of the genre's core followers to achieve mainstream success. His album sales in the U.S. currently exceed 15 million copies. He's a Grammy winner, a Blues Hall of Famer and a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. David Bowie recruited him to play guitar on his wildly popular "Let's Dance" album. And Guitar World magazine ranked SRV the greatest Blues guitarist of all time.

Leon Bridges

The influence of DFW Blues legends is as strong as ever. In the soulful sounds from Grammy Award winning recording artist and Fort Worth native Leon Bridges, we hear how the roots of the Blues have borne fruit in other musical genres. That's why we continue to honor them and him in this second season of the Blues-inspired City Edition Uniform and Collection. Dallas/Fort Worth, this is Trinity River Blues, Encore edition.
