Black History Month is a time to honor and highlight the legacy and contributions of Black leaders from past to present while demonstrating the Dallas Mavericks’ commitment to building a more just, equal and inclusive future.

Throughout the month on social and in game, the Dallas Mavericks will honor the history of Black History Month by showcasing a spoken word rhythm and blues video intertwined with Dallas Mavericks player messages to reflect on the rich culture that exists in DFW.

Black History Month Art Contest

To honor Black History and inspire future change makers, the Dallas Mavericks present the 2024 Black History Month Art Contest open Jan. 15th through Feb. 15th. North Texas students, grades 8 – 12, are encouraged to create and digitally submit a visual medium that interprets the beliefs of past and present black leaders and how they inspired others to unite and join hands for justice.

Black History Month Art Contest – Winners Trip

Black History Art Contestant Winners will be recognized at a home game on February 22nd and will attend an all-expense paid trip to Detroit, Michigan March 8 – 10th where they will visit historical sites as well as attend the Dallas Mavericks vs. Detroit Pistons game. Winners’ art will also be displayed in the African American Museum of Dallas.

Black Art Exhibits at Mavericks Home Games

The Dallas Mavericks will invite volunteers with Black Voters Matter to register fans to vote on the concourse during their home game vs. Bucks on February 3.

Adelle Turner Book Fair

On Feb. 6, the Dallas Mavericks will partner with Book Drive For Kids to host a book fair to provide access to culturally relevant books and ignite a passion for reading among the students at Adelle Turner Elementary. By donating books that highlight Black authors and narratives, the Mavericks reinforce the value of representation and diversity in literature.

Mavs Reading Time Out: BHM Edition

The team will host a Reading Time Out at Adelle Turner Elementary School with a special appearance from a Dallas Mavericks legend reading a book to students!

Stomp Wars vs. Mavs Drumline

The Dallas Mavericks will host a home game where Stomp Wars will compete against the Mavs Drumline to showcase one of the most artistic and cultural dances in Black culture.
