What an incredible night of music at American Airlines Center on Tuesday.
And, maybe, a bit of a missed opportunity for the Mavericks.
Queen, with a couple of rock legends – guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor – leading the way, played to a sold-out AAC and Adam Lambert fronted them. He clearly has done his homework studying up on Freddie Mercury.
And big kudos to Lambert for letting May and Taylor be the stars of the show. He played it perfectly. He was equal parts showman and sidekick.
And what kind of rock-‘n’-roll show brings out the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders to move to the beat of “Fat Bottomed Girls?” That needs no further explanation. It was a great and unexpected moment.
And the missed opportunity? As soon as the DCC came out for the 25th of 29 songs in Queen’s setlist, I just knew that the encore would feature a cameo appearance by Dirk Nowitzki – either in person or at least on a video tribute bellowing “We Are The Champions” in all its awful, off-key splendor from 2011 after the Mavericks’ championship.
Alas, it didn’t happen as Queen did “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions” as part of their encore, but played it straight. It’s possible Dirk and the family are traveling. But even a video of him on the balcony of AAC during that championship parade celebration would have been fun.
The home crowd would have found sensational. But, nevertheless, the show was awesome, as mentioned earlier. It had enough references to Freddie to give a nice nod to the history of the band. But a lot of hard-rocking in the moment, too. Just a great night, even without the Dirk presence.
